East Midlands Airport airside

Another resin flooring refurbishment project for East Midlands Airport by Donnelly Flooring. This workshop at the Airport needed a new resin floor surface to update an existing floor that was tired and degraded. New demarcation lines were also needed to separate  key areas including inspection pits and walkways.

In addition the refurbishment was part of a plan to improve overall safety at the facility, and to minimise any disruption the work was carried out over a weekend.

Resin flooring refurbishment – before

The existing resin floor at this site was in need of  refurbishment, as the existing paintwork on the floor was flaking and worn, and in some areas the were marked oil stains.

The areas around the inspection pit required resurfacing and new lane markings to ensure there was compliance DVSA requirements, and to ensure the surface would meet with HSE slip test recommendations to help improve safety at the site.

Preparation & primer sealing work for epoxy resin flooring

As with all of our projects good preparation is an essential part of the refurbishment process, and this project for East Midlands airport was no exception. We begin by cleaning the floor and removing all of the unwanted materials such as dirt and grime, the old paintwork paint and oil stains.

A “Diamond Grinding” process was used to remove the material and also to help key the concrete surface ready for the next stage.

Then we begin the second stage of the process with the application of a resin primer, which helps to identify any areas in need of repair. Any repairs are then  applied by hand using a trowel. To complete the second stage, we re-abrade the floor, to provide a superior keyed surface in preparation for the top coat.

Epoxy resin flooring – application of the top coat

The final part of the process is to apply the resin flooring top coat. In the case of this installation, we have marked the area surrounding the inspection pit in line with DVSA requirements, and also marked the areas for two walkways on each side.

We have also applied an anti slip surface, which will help contribute to an improvement in safety against slips and trips, in line with HSE recommendations.

In addition we provide advice on floor maintenance, including which solutions to use and how best to keep the floor in top condition.
